CS50x offers a free CS50 certificate after you meet its completion requirements. The verified edX certificate is a separate, paid option.

Before you spend

If your goal is learning and a CS50 completion record, investigate the free route first. Paying for verification is a separate decision.

Two certificate routes for the course

CS50’s own certificate page describes the free certificate: you need at least 70% on every required problem assignment and the final project. The course FAQ distinguishes that certificate from the verified edX version. Harvard’s course catalog currently lists the verified certificate at $219 and free course access.

How to claim the free certificate

The current CS50x FAQ requires edX registration for either route. Select the free or audit option if you want the free CS50 certificate.

  1. Use CS50’s Gradebook to check completion of every required assignment; watching the videos alone is insufficient.
  2. After the final required score and completed progress indicator appear, look in the Gradebook for the certificate-request link. The FAQ estimates about four hours for that link to appear.
  3. Follow the link, sign in with GitHub and download the certificate before the course deadline. Check the current FAQ for that deadline.

Why the paid certificate can take longer

The verified edX route has a different process. CS50 says issuance can take up to 30 days after coursework, payment and identity verification are complete and the Gradebook is linked to edX. Finishing coursework alone does not start every prerequisite. These are provider timeframes, not delivery guarantees.

Choose based on the requirement you need to meet

Ask a concrete question before paying: does the organisation receiving the certificate require the verified edX version? If so, get that requirement in writing and compare it with the provider’s current description. If you simply want a personal record of completion, the free option may meet that need.

Do not assume an employer or school treats the two records identically. Equally, do not assume a price makes a certificate more useful for your particular purpose. Acceptance is a decision for the receiving organisation.

Payment does not replace the work

The free route still has assessed completion requirements. A paid certificate is not a shortcut around learning or a promise of a job. Neither route should be described as a Harvard degree.

Use the current course FAQ to understand enrolment and certificate steps before starting. Keep track of the course version you are following: instructions linked from an older discussion may belong to a different year.
