Google AI Essentials and Google AI Professional Certificate are different programs. “Google AI Essentials Specialization” is the Coursera name for the Essentials offering.
Start by matching the product names
Google’s AI Essentials enrolment link leads to Coursera’s AI Essentials Specialization. Do not mistake those labels for competing courses. The separate AI Professional Certificate has a different curriculum.
| Program | Structure | Published focus |
|---|---|---|
| AI Essentials | 5 parts | Foundations, productivity, prompting, responsible use and further learning |
| AI Professional Certificate | 8 courses | Work tasks spanning planning, research, communication, content, analysis and building and deploying apps |
Match the scope to your next task
For an introduction, inspect the Essentials outline first. For a wider range of workplace applications, compare the Professional Certificate’s individual modules against the tasks you intend to practise. A broader outline can be relevant without proving deeper instruction in every topic.
Both are presented as accessible without prior AI experience and end in a Google course-completion credential. The Professional Certificate title does not turn it into a separate proctored professional certification exam. This guide compares published scope, not teaching effectiveness.
What do they cost?
Google lists $49 USD per month in the US and Canada for each program; that is not a CAD quote. Regional enrollment prices can differ. Coursera’s current listings link both to Plus. Your total depends on paid billing periods and the plan you select; use the subscription calculator rather than assuming two certificate names mean two one-off prices.
Be careful with course counts and time estimates
The current Professional Certificate course list contains eight courses, while one Google price FAQ still refers to seven. Use the current module list when checking what you will study. Provider time estimates are planning aids, not evidence of how long you personally need.
A useful decision is specific: identify a task you want to improve, find the module addressing it, and decide whether the time and price fit. “Professional” alone does not establish career value, employer recognition or a guaranteed skill level.
What this comparison can establish
Official pages can establish program names, published modules and advertised billing terms. They cannot establish our personal learning experience. We have not taken these programs and do not assign star ratings or declare a teaching-quality winner.
