The old “Google teaches R, IBM teaches Python” comparison is no longer a reliable description of these programs. The current Google FAQ explicitly describes Python.
Look beyond the programming language: the spreadsheet and visualisation tools provide a more useful starting point.
| Feature | Google Data Analytics | IBM Data Analyst |
|---|---|---|
| Current course count | 9 | 11 |
| Programming and querying | Python and SQL | Python and SQL |
| Other named tools | Spreadsheets and Tableau | Excel and Cognos |
| Entry information | Beginner pathway | Basic computer skills and high-school maths |
Why you may still see R in Google comparisons
Google’s current Coursera FAQ says the program teaches Python rather than R. Some older tags and text on the listing still mention R. For this comparison, the explicit current curriculum FAQ takes precedence over those remnants. A guide that simply repeats the older language split can therefore point you toward a decision that no longer matches the program.
Choose a tool match, not a winner by course count
Start with the tasks you want to practise and the tools named in opportunities that interest you. If Tableau is the relevant tool, inspect Google’s current modules; if Excel and Cognos matter to your plan, inspect IBM’s. Shared language labels do not mean identical projects, assessment or teaching.
Nine versus eleven courses is not a quality score. Providers can split the same amount of work into different numbers of modules. Likewise, a certificate title alone does not show how independently you can carry out an analysis. This source-based guide does not evaluate submitted work or claim that either program produces better job outcomes.
Treat duration as an estimate
Google’s listing suggests six months at ten hours per week. IBM’s headline suggests four months at the same weekly commitment, while its FAQ mentions five. Those are provider estimates with an internal inconsistency on the IBM page. They are not measured averages or guaranteed completion dates.
For planning, use a range and keep a buffer. If a short advertised duration is the deciding factor, inspect the full module list before committing. Study time, assessment attempts and prior familiarity can all affect your personal calendar.
Compare the checkout options separately
Both current listings display a Plus inclusion link. This guide has not established IBM’s current individual US subscription price, so it does not assume that the two individual prices match. Check your regional checkout and then use our cost calculator.
Choose based on documented content and an affordable study plan. First-hand accounts can answer a different question about teaching experience, but should come from people who actually completed the relevant version.
